Lab grown diamonds represent a technological breakthrough in the jewellery business with an increasingly popular method of producing them being Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Technology. CVD technology has been widely recognized for its ability to produce high-quality diamonds that are technologically innovative and precise. As such, many consumers are now choosing CVD diamonds as their diamond of preference when buying.
What Are CVD Diamonds?
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is one of several laboratory methods scientists use to grow diamonds. The first CVD lab diamonds were developed over a decade ago and employ highly sophisticated technology that mimics those chemical processes naturally occurring deep within the earth’s crust, where diamonds are formed.
The process involves growing layers of diamonds from gaseous mixtures containing high levels of carbon, thus enabling total control over the overall characteristics of each diamond, including its purity, size, etc.
Are CVD Diamonds Real?
Yes. CVD diamonds are 100% real diamonds.
They have all of the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds. The CVD diamonds look exactly like mined diamonds to the naked eye and they also look identical when using standard gemological testing.
All authentic CVD diamonds, which were graded by recognized gemological laboratories will be identified by a laser inscription located on the girdle of the diamond, indicating it is a lab grown diamond and providing full disclosure and building trust in the customer.
Brief History of CVD Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds began being developed through the HPHT method in 1956. The CVD method for developing diamonds did not become a complete success until the late 1980s. Scientists experimented extensively before finding a method for producing CVD diamonds. The original scientists who pioneered CVD diamond development included W.G. Eversole, Derjaguin, and J.C. Angus.
GIA researchers reported that initially, early CVD chambers could develop only one diamond seed at a time. Presently, modern CVD systems can purportedly develop 50 or more diamond seeds simultaneously. There is potential for increased scalability.
Also, according to the GIA, laboratory testing confirmed that:
- CVD technology has progressed rapidly
- Near-colourless diamonds of larger carat weight have been produced
- Successful testing on both a 3-carat CVD diamond (2016) and a 5-carat CVD diamond followed
The ability to control defects and enhance diamond quality has improved significantly over the last 20 years.
Why Were CVD Diamonds Developed?
CVD diamonds were developed as a way to meet some of the existing challenges within the traditional diamond industry:
- Lack of availability for natural diamonds
- Certified conflict-free ethical issues related to mining diamonds
- Economic constraints with respect to the high price point of mined diamonds
A Lab grown diamond is an affordable, certified, conflict-free, and scalable alternative.
Step-by-Step CVD Diamond Process
CVD diamonds are manufactured through the use of controlled chemical processes:
- In first step, a combination of hydrogen and hydrocarbon gas is fed into a vacuum chamber called a growth chamber.
- At this point, the vacuum chamber is kept under very low-pressure conditions and high temperatures.
- Once these conditions are achieved, Hydrogen will convert into what can be termed as “atomic” hydrogen, which helps facilitate diamond formation.
- These atomic hydrogen react with the hydrocarbon gas to produce single carbon atoms that then bond together layer after layer in order to form a crystalline diamond structure through the CVD process.
CVD diamonds grow layer by layer, atom by atom, which allows for high degree of purity and structural control.
Key Properties of CVD Diamonds
CVD diamonds are known for their exceptional qualities:
- High hardness and durability
- Excellent thermal conductivity
- Superior optical transparency
- Resistance to chemicals and heat
These properties make them ideal not only for jewellery but also for industrial applications.
Advantages of CVD Diamonds
CVD diamonds offer several benefits over traditional mined diamonds:
- 40-60% more affordable than natural diamonds
- Eco-friendly and sustainable
- Conflict-free sourcing
- High clarity and purity (often Type IIA diamonds)
- Greater control over quality and customization
CVD vs. Natural Diamonds
| Feature | CVD Diamonds | Mined Diamonds |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Lab-created | Earth-mined |
| Formation Time | Weeks | Millions of years |
| Price | More affordable | Expensive |
| Ethics | Conflict-free | May involve mining concerns |
| Appearance | Identical | Identical |
CVD diamonds have all the sparkle and endurance of natural diamonds but offer many other benefits in terms of cost and eco-friendliness.
The Dintara Perspective
Dintara Jewels believes in the technology of CVD diamonds for jewellery to be beautiful and intelligent. We design each piece of jewellery to produce extreme brilliance, and at the same time to reflect the modern values of sustainability and smart luxury.
Because today, a diamond is no longer simply about its origin; it’s also about how intelligently you decide upon which one to purchase.
